Download speed help question.?

Ok I was wondering is there anyway to increase my download speed. I use a 1.5mb internet speed and my computer is a 2.2ghz dual core cpu, 680i mobo and a 512mb gpu and windows xp pro. The max I download stuff at is around 165kb/s and my friend has the same exact computer he is just using a 8mb internet speed and windows vista. Yet when he downloads the same exact program off the same exact site just like me he is able to download it at around 800kb/s - 1mb/s. I was wondering if someone can explain to me why we have the same computers and use the same places to download yet he downloads extremely faster then I do. Can someone explain to me why this is and what I can do to get my download speed up to where his is.

The limit is your internet connection, and there's no anomalies with the numbers you have quoted.





Perhaps the issue of bytes vs. bits is confusing you?





1 byte = 8 bits, and when talking about bandwidths (speeds of connection) usually bits are used, otherwise everything else in computers is usually bytes.





1.5mb = 1.5mbit/sec = approx. 0.17mByte/sec = 170kByte/sec





8mb = 8mbit/sec = approx. 1mByte/sec = 1000kByte/sec





So the issue is with your internet speed. You may be able to achieve a faster speed with a different ISP, or you may be stuck with it due to geographical constraints (e.g. your line is too long compared to your friends - you'd have to move house to improve it!)

Reply:he could be on a different provider aswell. it all depends on what broadband package you have aswell. Go investigate and see. You are probably on a 2mbps internet connection. maybe upgrade ure broadband package.

we left the new att [1.5 mbps] for cavtel [24 mbps]


though downloads hover around 20mbps





12 hours of my hubby's tv show from britain downloaded in 2.5 hours





we changed from linksys to airport express. he downloads and my macs don't even notice





the provider and router make a HUGE difference
