Are download accelerators unnecessary?

I downloaded "download accelerator plus" and it impresses me for its speed. But suddenly one download from "download.com" made my computer act like it's virused (sudden restarting, Blue screens, immobilized antiviruses particularly Ad-Aware and PC-tools). I really think it's not the download because i trust "download.com(cNet)" i think it's the download accelerator i got from speedbit. Please Help me save my PC. Thanks! and hey, I'm using Mozilla Firefox. I really need your help.

Reply:Download accelerators work (basically) by pre-downloading content. This means you go to a web page and it looks for content that is linked to the current page and downloads it before you request it- This is faster for you, but is really not "accelerating" anything.

Others request the file in chunks at the same time- establishing multiple connections to the same download server (one connection requests the first 1/2 of the file and another requests the last 1/2). Many download sites do not work with these products as they are configured to allow only one connection at a time or they do not support the "chunking" feature.

I don't use one at all. I suggest you uninstall it.
